The issue of Kenyan Transport is more than one just of infrastructure; it’s also a problem of the mind; What do the people want, why do they want it? And can you show ‘them’ what would truly work? Can you make the people and the institutions understand the need for change despite what has already been done to advance the cause of public infrastructure?
We, as a country, recently spent $668M on The Nairobi Expressway, initially planned as a 27km dual carriageway. What would it take to show the people that it’s not enough? To get them to understand that transport is about more than just a road, that it’s a definition of your systems and way of thinking in general?
How do we make the institutions understand that a high-capacity road is not a solve-all; that we need systems that consider the individual and the problem of society will ultimately be solved? That building more lanes just leads to more cars, hence more traffic?
That is the problem I aim to tackle with RKT; defining the future of Kenyan transport, how it affects us, and getting different worldviews on what people want.
